About this Course
Learn to compose and photograph mouth-watering food shots with our introductory course to food photography. In 4 weeks you will learn camera basics, develop an eye for composition with storytelling and using props and deepen your understanding of how to use light to enhance your photographs, and enhance your skills in preparing food for photography.
Each week, assignments are designed to enhance your photography skills. Weekly group discussions will explore understanding light, composition and various styles of food photography. Whether you are a beginner photographer or more seasoned professional this module will build your knowledge and skills to take beautiful food photos for whatever your purpose.
Required Equipment: A camera, preferable entry-level digital camera or upwards, is preferred. A simple tripod would be useful for efficiency and stable images

Nelly holds a degree in Photography from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In the Netherlands, Nelly worked for various fashion clients and magazines before landing the job of Chief Photographer at one of the leading Dutch fashion, health and fitness magazines. Today, Nelly is working as a freelance commercial photographer specialising in food and lifestyle. Nelly also produces and publishes cookbooks for various chefs and nutritionists.

Welcome & Orientation
Complete this short orientation to learn how to navigate through Le Cordon Bleu's Engage learning platform and upload required documentation.
Food photography and editing basics
Get started with understanding camera basics including, exposure, focus, aperture and shutter-speed. We will explore lighting sources and angles to effectively manipulate light. We will also learn editing techniques for food photography.
Composition and Styling
Photograph composition and styling involves storytelling and setting the scene with props and backdrops. We will also learn about the rule of thirds and how to use negative space.
Workflow and efficiency
Planning the shoot, using inspiration and mood boards to build a scene is an important part of taking that perfect picture. We will also discuss tips for working with clients as well as techniques to photograph for graphic design.
Style and trends
This week we will explore photographic styles and trends including: light, high-key photography; dark, moody, low-key photography; rustic, country style photography; modern, clean photography; and art in food photography.
